Latitude 54°S captures the immense, silent majesty of the Southern Ocean, centering on a monumental iceberg adrift in the sub-Antarctic wilderness,
Referenced from a photographic image and dairy extract provided by a childhood friend, Jenny Donn.
The color palette was intentionally restrained to build mood and depth. Rather than relying on stark whites, the ice is built up through translucent, glazed layers of turquoise, deep cerulean, and shadowed blues, capturing the illusion of light trapped deep within frozen fractures. In contrast, the overcast sky is rendered in warm, diffused tones of rose-taupe, soft sepia, and muted violet—reflecting the heavy, filtered light characteristic of high southern latitudes.
Day 10: Sunday 10 November 2002. "It looked fairly close, but the radar told a different story. It was actually 19 miles away. These huge white flat topped shapes tower high above the cold blue sea. The temperature is starting to drop markedly as we steam closer head on "
